A breathtaking video of Washington Monument being struck by a lightning bolt has taken over internet. Followed by incident, Washington Monument will remain closed on August 17, Tuesday due to repair work to be done as lightning strike has damd electronic access system. National Park officials took to Twitter and shared video with latest update on monument. 

video was initially shared by Twitter user Travis Nix and w it has become viral with more than 2,000 retweets and thousands of views.

Lightning strikes Washington monument

12-second video shows a lightning strike hitting Washington Monument late at night. Soon after lightning clashes were seen around National Mall, sky turned blue followed by a huge bolt of lightning.

According to National Park Service, incident took place around 12:30 am on Sunday, and  video was later posted at 1 am.  next morning, it was confirmed that lightning strike h damd monument's electronic access system.

Washington DC has been witnessing heavy rain and storms over weekend triggering floods in several parts. Firefighters are deployed in flood-affected areas for rescuing trapped people.

Strikes on Washington Monument

re have been several instances in past when Washington Monument was struck by lightning. Earlier in June, a lightning bolt struck tip of monument after which its im went viral on internet.
