After visiting an oncologist, she got her eye bandaged due to the present sate of her eyes of the problem.
What is corneal damage?
Corneal injury is a wound to the part of the eye known as the cornea. The cornea is the crystal clear (transparent) tissue that covers the front of the eye. It works with the lens of the eye to focus images on the retina. The main causes in such a case could be abrasions -- Includes scratches or scrapes on the surface of the cornea, chemical injuries due to by any fluid that gets into the eye, or cause of contact lens problems such as overuse, poor fit, or sensitivity to contact lens care solutions.
Can opting for lenses lead to corneal damage?
"Yes. Using non sterile lenses or using lenses beyond their intended life can lead to corneal damage," Dr Ayush Shukla, MBBS, stated.
"However, lenses are perfectly safe if used within the realm of safe use as prescribed by an ophthalmologist. People should think twice before shopping for recreational lenses without proper advice," he said.
On the other hand, a corneal abrasion can also occur if you wear your lenses for too many hours, sleep in your lenses, or a foreign substance gets caught under your lens, making it uncomfortable, and may even cause an infection, as per a Healthline report.
Can those with corneal damage face permanent lose of sight?
Dr Shukla said, "Corneal damage is fairly common and only in case of extreme infection, extensive damage or improper treatment can cause permanent damage. Not impossible but highly improbable."
