Milk is a comforting beverage enjoyed by both young and old. It can be used for baking, mixed with your favourite smoothies, create a fruit salad, milks shakes with your favourite flavourings or simply drink just like that - but boiled. However, if you’re drinking it raw, you may want to stop immediately, as research suggests that this habit could lead to various food-borne illnesses.

What is raw milk?

For those unversed, raw milk is milk from cows, buffaloes, sheep, camels, and goats that has not undergone pasteurization, unlike the milk typically found in stores.

According to Harvard Medical School, while there are claims that raw milk can aid lactose intolerance, treat allergies, and support gut health, extensive research has shown these claims to be myths.

“Due to its neutral pH and high nutritional and water content, milk is an ideal breeding ground for bacteria,” according to Healthline.

Raw milk can carry germs that cause food poisoning, potentially leading to severe stomach upset, diarrhea, vomiting, and cramps.

Harvard Medical School notes, “Germs that may be found in raw milk and can cause food-borne illness include Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria, and Campylobacter.”
