Earthquake of 5.5 magnitude hits Arunachal Pradesh, tremors felt in North-East

A minor earthquake of 5.5 magnitude was felt in the North-eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh on Friday afternoon. The epicentre of the quake was at the depth of 16.8 km and was located 64 km northeast of Bomdila, Arunachal Pradesh, as per the US Geological Survey. Tremors of the quake were also felt in Assam.

Update at 4:44 PM: Arunachal Pradesh government issues statement:

"5.6 magnitude earthquake occurred at 2:52 PM. The epicentre of the earthquake was at East Kameng district. Two aftershocks of the quake were also felt at 3:04 PM and 3:21 PM in Kurung Kumey district. No damage has been reported."

Update at 15:50: China has attempted to use the earthquake to needle India over its border, with state-run CGTN reporting the epicentre as Shannan in the Tibetan autonomous region.

The earthquake was reported at around 3:19 PM IST.

This has come amid the floods situation in Assam that has submerged over 30 districts in the state. The worst affected areas are Lakhimpur, Majuli, Kaziranga, Morigaon, Barpeta, and Nalbari. The death toll of people owing to the situation is over 20 people.  Over 50 lakh people have been affected because of the state. The government has set up over 183 relief camp for the people affected by the floods in the state. Over one lakh people are living in the relief camps currently.
