Six people were arrested on Sunday in Mumbai's Santa Cruz area for allegedly beating to death a man they suspected was a mobile thief, police said.

The deceased, identified as Shehzad Khan, had entered a garden in the early hours of Friday and the six accused, who stay in the vicinity, caught and assaulted him thinking he was a mobile phone thief, a Santa Cruz police station official said.

"They tied Khan to a pole and hit him with ropes and bamboo sticks. He collapsed inside an autorickshaw and was declared dead on arrival after passersby rushed him to a hospital. All six accused were held on Sunday," he added.
