Dravidian parties in Tamil Nadu released poll manifesto for general elections, having similar poll promises including the release of Rajiv Gandhi assassination convicts. Apart from the national parties, the regional parties also separately release election manifestos which have been a regular practice even during the general elections. Though there are not many new fancy attractive scheme, they announce general schemes which they promise which can be implemented by being in the alliance who are going to be in the power.

There are certain poll promises in the state of Tamil Nadu which are been on the list of for last two decades which include the Katchatheevu issue,Tamil fishermen issue, Srilankan Tamil issue, Ramasethu project, Release of 7 Rajiv Gandhi assassination convicts, however, Cauvery issue is not in the manifesto of both AIADMK and DMK this time since the issue is more or less sorted out after the verdict of the supreme court.

But the poll promise which speaks about the release of 7 Rajiv Gandhi assassination convicts has become the talking point since the matter is controversial always.
Both the parties have spoken for the release of the Rajiv killers.

DMK had mentioned that DMK will urge the center and state governments to take appropriate action to release on humanitarian grounds the seven persons including Perarivalan who were convicted in the case of Rajiv Gandhi assassination, while AIADMK manifesto said that they will take all the necessary legal steps and also will insist president to release the 7 convicts who are in the jail for 27 years.

Many are questioning as how can DMK make such a promise when they are in the alliance with Congress party, DMK leaders claim that the Congress president Rahul Gandhi and Gandhi family have already forgiven the 7 convicts.Congress chief Rahul Gandhi also last week said that they forgive the killers of his father and said that the law can take its own course of action.

Meanwhile, AIADMK government also passed a resolution in the cabinet and recommended to the governor of Tamilnadu that they should be released by the governor by using article 161 of the Indian constitution,But their ally BJP previously rejected the proposal of the state government and said that the home ministry doesn't concur with the view of state government in the release of 7 convicts since it'll be a bad precedence and could create international ramifications.

However, the matter is with the governor of Tamilnadu as the state government have already sent the recommendations to the governor of Tamilnadu to decide on the release the convicts.

We have to remember its not only Rajiv Gandhi who died in the bomb blast which happened at Sriperambadur in 1991,Its 14 others including policemen and women who were on the duty to provide security for former prime minister. The family members who lost their life in the blast are still suffering even after 28 years after the incident,The family members doesn't want the assassination convicts to be released at any cost since their loss and sufferings has become irreversible.

Many political analysts also feel that how can this be a poll manifesto for the general elections when the matter is already before the Tamilnadu governor as that is the last resort for the release of the 7 convicts.

It should be waited and watched if these issues are still relevant for the people to choose a party for a general election.
