With less than a month left for the Lok Sabha 2019 polls, the Congress and JD(S), who in 2018 joined hands to form the government in Karnataka, have forged an alliance for the upcoming General elections.

After months of stand-off over the seat-sharing, which included no compromise on a few specific seats, it has been announced that the grand old party will fight in 20 constituencies, while the JD(S) will fight on the other eight.

There were reports that the JD(S) had wanted 12 seats, which Congress was very reulctant to give. Only a week ago, JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda had maintained that his party will get a minimum of 10 seats following his meeting with the Congress president

"There are 28 seats in all. I have clinched 10 seats. The final decision will be taken after Rahul Gandhi discusses it with KC Venugopal (of Congress) and Danish Ali (of JD-S)," said Deve Gowda while speaking to media after meeting Rahul on the issue of seat-sharing in the state for Lok Sabha elections.

But now it has been confirmed that the JD(S) has accepted coming down to 8 seats following meeting between the top brass of the two parties, including Rahul Gandhi's meeting with Danish Ali.

Following are the constituencies in Karnataka from where JD(S) will fight the upcoming Lok Sabha polls:

  • Uttara Kannada
  • Chikkamagaluru
  • Shimoga
  • Tumkur
  • Hasan
  • Mandya
  • Bengaluru North
  • Vijayapura

Dates of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls were announced on Sunday by the Election Commission. Unlike 2014, elections in 2019 would be held in seven phases starting April 11 and ending May 19. The counting of votes would be done on May 23.

Polls in Karnataka will be held in two phases. The first date of polling is April 18, while the second is April 23. In the 2014 polls, BJP had won 17 seats, with the Congress winning nine and JD(S) winning two.
