With the countdown to the all-important 2019 Lok Sabha polls on, and with critical assembly elections in five states due in the next few weeks, November may just be the most important month in terms of deciding who will come up trumps in the general elections. In this light, Republic TV and CVoter are presenting the latest National Approval Ratings, which gives a complete and realistic snapshot of prevailing country-wide electoral scenario.
In October's edition, the final tally of the Republic-CVoter National Approval Ratings had shown the NDA retaining a majority, while the UPA had progressed beyond the 100-mark. Other parties, meanwhile, which may lean one way or the other, pooled together a combined 155 seats. Since then, a lot has happened, even as recently as Wednesday, when the Modi government secured a massive victory amid the politics and fearmongering that has been done over the state of the nation's economy, with India securing its highest-ever ranking on the World Bank's Ease of Doing Business by jumping 23 positions to Rank 77 globally.
Meanwhile, even as the Prime Minister dedicated the world's tallest statue -- the Statue of Unity -- to the nation on the 143rd birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and a few days before that, commemorated Subhash Chandra Bose and the 75th anniversary of the Azad Hind Government, a massive war of words was triggered over appropriation of freedom icons. At the same time, Rahul Gandhi and Shashi Tharoor have continued to play the religion card, though from different sides, as while the Congress president has continued where he left off at the Gujarat and Karnataka elections by claiming he has a better understanding of Hindutva than the BJP and RSS, Tharoor has polarised in the other direction, with the BJP furious with his remarks on 'good Hindu-bad Hindu' vis-a-vis the Ayodhya Ram Mandir dispute and his unsourced 'Chappal-Shivling-Scorpion' analogy attack at the Prime Minister.
Additionally, and significantly, the Supreme Court has delayed its hearings in the Ayodhya dispute, and will only decide in January when the hearings will take place. This has caused many among the pro-Mandir bent-of-mind, including the RSS, VHP and Hindu Mahasabha, to push the government to do whatever it can to build the Ram Mandir, with an ordinance on the matter the most frequently stated solution. On Thursday, RSS ideologue and Rajya Sabha MP Rakesh Sinha has intimated that he will be bringing a private members bill in Parliament seeking to build the Ram Mandir. The other side in this debate argues that the Constitution is supreme and that the apex court's verdict must be awaited, though the Congress is known to have held another view as well -- that the Supreme Court's verdict should only come after the 2019 elections. A controversy on similar lines was also witnessed in Kerala in October following the Supreme Court's verdict allowing women aged 10-50 to enter Sabarimala Temple for the first time.
Finally, the last month has seen heated polemics over the events at the CBI, with the government acting on the CVC's recommendation to send the two top-most officers at India's premier investigative agency -- Rakesh Asthana and Alok Verma -- on leave after they had both accused the other of corruption, with the Opposition jumping in to insert a Rafale angle and accusing the government of taking over institutions, and the government countering, stating that it acted in order to maintain the CBI's institutional integrity.
