Earlier on Wednesday, China, buckling under international pressure said that it took the decision after it found no objection to the listing proposal by the US, the UK, and France following a careful study of the revised materials.
In a huge diplomatic win for India, the United Nations Wednesday designated Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Azhar as a "global terrorist" after China lifted its hold on a proposal to blacklist him. The 1267 Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee of the UN Security Council has detailed criteria for the listing procedures. A press release was issued by China claiming all protocols were followed and the decision was taken carefully after studying the materials.
"The proper settlement of the above-mentioned issue again shows that in international counter-terrorism cooperation, we have to uphold the rules and procedures of relevant UN body, follow the principle of mutual respect, resolve differences and build consensus through dialogue, and prevent politicising technical issues," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang.
Reiterating BJP's stand on their fight against terrorism, Prime Minister Modi announced how India achieved what it had been trying for a while.
He said, "It is reported from the United Nations that the notorious terrorist, Masood Azhar, has been banned. Today it is satisfying to see the world is in accordance. This is a major breakthrough in the struggle against terrorism and the long-standing efforts India has been making to uproot terrorism."
Following India's massive diplomatic victory on Thursday, Pakistan had been forced to act freezing Azhar's assets.
The Pakistan Foreign Ministry has issued a notification saying that the travel restriction, arms embargo and freezing of funds of Masood Azhar, as per the protocol. The UNSC designation of a global terrorist means that Azhar will be affected in mainly three ways: his assets would be freezed, there will be a travel ban on him and there will be an arms embargo on him.
