Exercising the right to vote is one of the chief civic duties for every citizen in a democratic nation such as ours. In order to cast their vote, every citizen is required to possess a Voter ID card that makes them eligible to fulfil this duty. 


Any living person above 18 years of age is eligible to procure one, and with the advent of the digital age, one can easily apply for Voter ID online. In order to complete your Voter ID registration online, you will need scanned copies of relevant documents and identification. 


To apply for Voter ID, three fundamental requirements must be fulfilled as listed below;


The person must be an Indian Citizen.
The person must be 18 years old or older.
The person must have a permanent residential address.


To apply for Voter ID online, these are the necessary documents you will need;


a. Voter ID Documents Required for Identity and Age Proof

1. PAN Card
2. Aadhar Card issued by UIDAI
3. Driving License
4. Birth Certificate issued by the Birth Registrar’s Office
5. Birth Certificate issued by School or other academic institution 
6. Class 10 marksheet (if it contains date of birth)
7. Class 8 marksheet (if it contains date of birth) 
8. Class 5 marksheet (if it contains date of birth) 

b. Voter ID Documents Required for Address Proof

1. Passport issued by Govt. Of India
2. Driving License
3. Ration Card
4. Current Bank Pass Book/Current Post Office Pass Book
5. Current Rent Agreement 
6. Current Bill for Water/Electricity/Telephone/LPG connection for that address
7. Post/Mail delivered via Indian Postal Department at applicant’s address

c. Recent Passport Size Photograph


Additional details that should be kept in mind to apply for Voter ID online; 
1.    Applicants must ensure the information such as spellings of names and address, date of birth, and other information are correct and consistent across documents. 
2.    Applicants must not be facing criminal charges
3.    Applicants should ensure they submit and apply for Voter ID through Government of India websites or websites approved by the Government of India.

Once you have the scanned copies of the aforementioned documents, you can proceed with your Voter ID online application by visiting the National Voter Services Portal website. 


Step One:


To get started on your Voter ID online application, click on the ‘Apply online for registration of new voter/due to shifting from AC’ option as previewed below.

Step Two:


Clicking on the ‘Apply online for registration of new voter/due to shifting from AC’ option will bring you to the ‘Form 6’ webpage.

Select the language you are comfortable with from the drop down menu available at the top right corner of the webpage as previewed below. Languages available for Voter ID registration through Form 6 are Hindi, English and Malayalam. 
Proceed to fill in all the information such as Name, Date of Birth, Address and other personal information required to apply for Voter ID online.


Step Three:


Attach the scanned copies of the Voter ID documents required, and click on Submit after thoroughly double-checking the information you have filled out.
Stay up-to-date about the status of your Voter ID online application through a link you will receive shortly after you submit the Form 6 for your Voter ID registration. The process for issue of Voter ID takes up to 30 days.

Upon receiving your Voter ID card, verify the accuracy of your personal details with your documents in order to make sure there are no discrepancies such as misspelled names or address, inaccurate birth date, contact number and so on.
