A variety of tea from Assam has scripted history after being sold at an eyewatering rate of Rs. 50,000 per kg at an auction in Guwahati.

Manohari Tea Estate Gold tea was purchased for Rs 50,000 per kg by Sourabh Tea Traders Pvt Ltd at the Guwahati Auction Centre. This comes little over a year after the Manohari Tea Estate of Mohanbari in Dibrugarh had created history on by selling its gold tea at Rs. 39,001 per kg.

Before that, the record was Rs 18,801 per kg and was held by Donyi Polo of Arunachal Pradesh, where 2.5-kilograms were sold on Nov 9, 2017. In the financial year 2017-18, a total of 186 million kilograms of tea was sold in Guwahati Tea Auction Centre.

Describing the variety of tea, Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) secretary Priyanuj Dutta said this variety was cultivated from the finest tea clones and is hand-picked and very delicate. She added that it has a subtle aroma and is made from the finest clones, the P-126 which is said to be the best clone.

Speaking on this, the Manohari Tea Estate owner Rajan Lohia stated that the weather this year was unfavorable for the production of the Gold tea and only five kilograms of this could be produced this year - explaining why the going rate would be so high. He added that the weather was not very supportive.

Earlier, in the month of September 2018, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had also emphasised on the need to use scientific methods for Assam tea to be able to capture the tea market in the country.
