The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President of West Bengal Dilip Ghosh on Thursday reacted to the unlawful detention of the Union Minister Babul Supriyo by the students inside the Jadavpur University. Speaking to Republic TV, he said that Jadavpur University has always been in limelight due to their anti-national activities and the students' behaviour towards a Union Minister is uncalled for. Babul Supriyo was invited for a debate event organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) but he faced confrontation from the students while entering and exiting the venue. The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Suranjan Das, was allegedly attacked in the face-off and has been hospitalised.
Dilip Ghosh's reaction
Speaking to Republic TV, Dilip Ghosh said, "This is not the first time that Jadavpur University is making headlines. Prior to this, they were known for their anti-national activities. But today they have even become anti-social. People involved in this firstly do not even look like they are students, secondly, these students think that Jadavpur University is out of the Indian law & constitution and that is what makes them behave in such manner."
He also mentioned that the university professors and authorities failed to intervene in the matter making it worse. He said, "Babul Supriyo is not just a Union Minister but a very well known celebrity and keeping aside the ideology he follows, he is the shaan of Bengal. Such violent behaviour by the students and also giving life threats to the Union Minister, who would want such students for their country? The professors are also supporting the students and the authorities are taking no action against them. The authority should have taken strict actions on these students how did they even let such an incident happen. Earlier also the TMC members had ill-treated and behaved in the same manner with Babul Supriyo in Assamsol, West Bengal."
Lockdown in Jadavpur University campus
Babul Supriyo was invited by the ABVP members to speak at an event at the university. When he tried to enter the campus for the event he was blocked by many students many of whom were members of CPM-backed Students Federation of India (SFI). They gheraoed him and had a verbal confrontation mainly over the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Matters turned worse as Babul Supriyo was stuck inside the campus for at least three hours after the students blocked him. He sat on the media OB Van bonnet. The West Bengal Governor and the CRPF rushed to the Jadavpur University. The Kolkata police too were at the gate outside with its force.
A situation of lockdown prevailed in the university as lights were turned off and Supriyo managed to go along with the Governor Jagdeep Dhankar after he intervened. Supriyo and Dhankar tried to leave in a vehicle but were stopped by the protestors. The Governor had spoken to the Vice-Chancellor and told him that it was improper of him to leave the premises and not take immediate action against the ruckus created by the students. He also called up CM Mamata Banerjee and Chief Secretary Malay Kumar De and asked them to intervene in the situation.
