Chandrayaan 2: 5 things that will make every Indian proud

Chandrayaan 2 is our country’s second moon mission managed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). With it, India took a giant leap towards the outer space, making one billion dreams soar even higher. The Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark-III or GSLV Mk – III, ISRO’s most powerful launch vehicle, successfully lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, placing the spacecraft in the Earth’s Orbit. ISRO’s committed and continuous efforts have resulted in Chandrayaan 2’s flawless launch, making every Indian swell with pride. Here are five reasons why every Indian should feel proud of it:

#1 Landing on the Moon for the first time

India will land on the lunar surface for the very first time with ISRO’s Chandrayaan 2. Chandrayaan 1, the spacecraft orbiting around the Moon helped analyze lunar surface. However, in this mission, Chandrayaan 2 has three components, namely, the Lander Vikram, the Orbiter, and the Rover Pragyaan. Meanwhile, the Orbiter will orbit around the Moon, the Lander will attempt a soft landing on the moon to set up the six-wheeled artificial-intelligence powered Rover. The Rover will evaluate the lunar surface and conduct experiments for exploration and further studies.

#2 India’s ‘Rocket Women’

The Chandrayaan 2 project is being led by two veteran women scientists of ISRO apart from the maiden milestones. Ritu Karidhal and Muthayya Vanitha, also known as India’s ‘Rocket Women’ led the project for all its main components. Ritu Karidhal is the Mission Director, while Muthayya Vanitha is Project Director for Chandrayaan 2. These women scientists have been working with ISRO for almost two decades with their illustrious scientific prowess and critical expertise for space engineering. They have been a part of sub-system development for satellites and past launches.

#3 Inaugural mission to land on the Moon’s South Polar Region

Chandrayaan 2 proved to be a boon to our country as it helped put us on the map in the global space research. This is the first-ever space mission to conduct a soft landing on the Moon’s South Polar region. It is also the first Indian lunar expedition with homegrown technology. The launch vehicle GSLV Mk - III has been completely designed and made within the country, hence Chandrayaan 2 is a fully domestic mission.

#4 India now the 4th country to have ever landed on the Moon

Previously, the United States, China, and the former Soviet Union have attempted a soft landing on the moon. With Chandrayaan 2 mission, India has accompanied these league of nations across the world to make a soft landing on the lunar surface. This led our country into a group of global leaders for space technology and research. India is now regarded amongst the largest space research nations.

#5 Minimal cost of engineering

The economic cost of engineering stood out for the Chandrayaan 2 mission. Its total cost is much lower than that of several other lunar missions. Specifically, the total cost of Chandrayaan 2 is INR 978 crores, the mission cost being INR 603 crores and the cost of its launch is INR 375 crores. Interestingly, this mission cost a lower budget than many English movies such as Avengers Endgame, Titanic, Avatar, Spider-Man 3. Thus, ISRO has now made history with this cost-effective but efficient space mission.
