Chidambaram questions NDA government on status of 19 lakh non-citizens
P Chidambaram's family tweeted on his behalf, question the government over NRC in Assam and how it plans to deal with 19 lakh persons who are non-citizens.
India's former Home Minister, P Chidambaram has questioned the NDA government on the future of 19 lakh persons who have been declared non-citizens in the NRC process. Chidambaram's family, on his behalf, released a series of tweets on October 7, questioning the NDA government about NRC in Assam.
P. Chidambaram, who is currently lodged in Tihar jail for alleged money laundering in the INX Media case, also asked the government on where will these people go if Bangladesh has been assured that the process of NRC will not affect them.
Bangladesh PM on NRC
According to a report by a local newsgroup, the Bangladesh Prime Minister opined she does not see NRC as a problem
“I don’t see any problem. I had a talk with Prime Minister Modi. Everything is OK.”
Bangladesh Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina participated in a bilateral meeting with PM Modi on October 5. Subsequently, the Bangladesh Foreign Secretary, Shahidul Haque, had stated that Bangladesh has accepted that the implementation of the NRC as an internal matter of India.
Chidambaram lodged in Tihar Jail
On May 15, 2017, CBI had lodged an FIR against P Chidambaram alleging irregularities in FIPB clearance granted to the INX Media group for receiving overseas funds of Rs 305 crore in 2007 when Chidambaram was the Finance Minister. Thereafter, ED lodged a money laundering case in 2017. The Delhi High Court had on August 20, rejected anticipatory bail pleas of Chidambaram in the INX media scam cases. The former Home Minister has been lodged in Tihar jail for over a month now.
