Congress targets Delhi HC judge who denied bail plea to Chidambaram
Amid the ongoing probe against Chidambaram, Congress leaders have targeted former Delhi HC judge who dismissed former FM's bail plea in INX Media case.
The Congress party has stopped yet another low with its attacks on the Judiciary of India. Amid the ongoing probe against former Finance Minister Chidambaram, Congress leaders have targeted former Delhi High Court judge who days ago dismissed the bail plea of Chidambaram in the INX Media case. Justice Sunil Gaur dismissed the anticipatory bail plea of Chidambaram in the Delhi High Court, following which the CBI detained the Congress leader for questioning in the INX Media case. Days after the verdict in Chidambaram's case, Justice Sunil Gaur retired as the Delhi HC judge on August 23.
Congress targets Judiciary
As per reports, the former Delhi HC judge has been appointed as the chairperson of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) Appellate Tribunal recently. He is set to take over the post on September 23. In the light of the development, leaders of the Congress party targeted their attacks at the former Delhi HC judge. Congress spokesperson and Supreme Court advocate Brijesh Kalappa took a jibe at Sunil Gaur, questioning his appointment as the chairperson of the PMLA Appellate Tribunal. Taking to Twitter, Kalappa taunted Gaur over his appointment within a week of his retirement. Furthermore, Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala also took a barb at the judiciary over the development.
Who is Sunil Gaur?
Among the several high profile cases heard by the former Delhi HC, National Herald case and AgustaWestland chopper scam are some of them. Justice Sunil Gaur had previously passed an order giving clearance for the prosecution of top Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul in the National Herald case. Recently, he denied anticipatory bail to nephew of senior Congress leader and MP CM Kamal Nath's son Ratul Puri in connection with the AgustaWestland chopper scam. Pronouncing the verdict denying bail to Chidambaram on August 20, the former Delhi HC judge had called him the "kingpin" in the INX Media case.
SC grants interim protection to Chidambaram
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Wednesday granted interim protection to senior Congress leader P Chidambaram from arrest in a case being probed by Enforcement Directorate in the INX media case. The top court will continue the hearing in Chidambaram's plea against Delhi High Court’s order of dismissing his anticipatory plea on a case being probed by the ED. He was arrested by the CBI on August 22 following dramatic sequence of events from his residence. He is in CBI custody till August 30 for questioning in the INX Media case.
