Anupam Kher has taken on Congress president Rahul Gandhi over the pathetic display that was witnessed in Kolkata on Friday night when Congress workers barged into a multiplex while The Accidental Prime Minister was playing and ripped apart the screen.

Taking to Twitter, the veteran actor who plays former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh in the film that is based on the book of the same name by Dr Singh's former media advisor Sanjaya Baru, has questioned Rahul Gandhi about the actions of his party workers, referencing the Congress president's past tweets and statements championing Freedom of Expression.

Anupam Kher had earlier highlighted the incident to West Bengal Chief Minister and AITC Rajya Sabha MP Derek O'Brien:

On Friday, in an absolutely deplorable display of hooliganism, Congress workers in Kolkata entered and vandalised a movie theatre in Kolkata's Quest mall to protest the release of The Accidental Prime Minister.

The party workers had been up to civic disorder all day, first burning effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Hind cinema at Kolkata's Chandni Chowk.

They barged into Quest mall, carrying Congress' flags and chanting slogans calling for the movie to be shut down, with the Mall's security unable to put a stop to their entry. They proceeded up to the INOX multiplex at the mall's higher floors during the 8:20 pm primetime show, entered the hall, went up to the screen and ripped it apart at the bottom.

Visuals accessed of the vandalism shows the screen torn in two places right down the middle, with the larger tear being up to about 10 feet high and the smaller one, up to 5 feet. Staff are seen attempting to temporarily patch up the screen.

However, despite the clear blemish in the screen, the Congress workers' designs didn't pan out as the audience continued to watch the film in this state and the multiplex refused to cancel the show in question or any other show of the film. The police also then intervened to bring the situation under control.

An INOX regional director has issued a statement. "There had been a minor interruption around 8 pm at Quest. Hence with the help of the police the situation was taken under control and the normal screening continued", said Amitava Guha Thakurta.
