Dehradun: Six die after allegedly consuming poisonous liquor

Six people have died after allegedly consuming illicit liquor in a slum area of Dehradun. The police said that the deaths occurred near Patharia Peer Chawk

Six people died on Friday after allegedly consuming illicit liquor in a slum area of Dehradun. The police said that the deaths occurred near Patharia Peer Chawk on Nashville road in the city. A senior police official said that the matter is being investigated and it is difficult to say what led to the deaths until the final report arrives. "We are waiting for the post-mortem report. The cause of the deaths will become clear only after that," SP(City) Shweta Chaubey said. 

Spurious alcohol kills 40 in Assam

In a similar incident, at least 40 people died after allegedly consuming spurious liquor in Assam's Jorhat and Golaghat district in February. As per PTI, five women were among those who died in the incident. The first incident was reported from Salmara Tea Estate. Two Excise officers were suspended with immediate effect and two people involved in making country liquor were arrested. During that time, more than a hundred people are reported to have consumed the liquor that was bought from the same seller.

Illicit liquor takes 100 lives in UP

Similarly, around 100 people died due to consumption of spurious liquor in Saharanpur and Kushinagar districts of Uttar Pradesh and Haridwar district of neighboring Uttarakhand. According to media reports, the hooch was suspected to have been made in villages near the Uttarakhand-Uttar Pradesh border. Amongst the affected, there were families, which had lost more than one male member. The noxious alcoholic concoction, that sometimes comes mixed with deadly urea, battery fluid and chemicals, for an instant and extra high, is the main cause of deaths in such a large number.
