With the festival of Diwali right around the corner, full-blown celebrations are expected across the country. While it is normal to celebrate the fun-filled occasion with fireworks, lit lamps, and decorations, one must ensure that pets are taken well care of and protected from the ill effects as the event is commemorated.
Pets, usually are triggered by loud noises, blaze, and smoke which are common during the celebrations of this festival. They experience fear, confusion, anxiety, panic attacks, and react by running away or hiding, not eating and going out of the house. Dogs may also suffer from seizures and even myocardial infractions (heart attacks).
It is important that during this time, to make sure the pets are protected from these triggers and taken well care of.
Here is what you can do to keep your pets safe and happy:
- Keep them company during this period when they are vulnerable. Give them the extra attention, care, and love they deserve by cuddling them, playing with them etc
- Ensure they are healthy, eating on time, sleeping well, having a good appetite, behaving normally
- Make sure the house is well insulated from loud noises, firework, and smoke
- Play soothing music during fireworks so your pet stays calm and happy
- Take your pets for walks in the mornings when there are no bursting of firecrackers
- Keep a care package, emergency food and first-aid handy in case the pet is injured or falls sick
- Put an identification tag with current contact details on the pet in case it runs away
- Have numbers of the municipal corporation, animal shelter home and veterinarians with you in case of dire circumstances
- Keep your fireworks, and inflammable out of your pet's reach
- Use eco-friendly firecrackers and decorations and spread awareness about such products in your locality
- In case there is too much of noise and fire hazard in your locality, you can go on a vacation to a quieter place this Diwali
