As per a new rule by the Municipal Corporation, residents of Ghaziabad will have to get a registered license worth ₹5,000 to pet a dog. As per the new notification by the corporation, a fine of ₹500 will also be charged to the people who let their dog defecate in parks or on the roads. This has come after the numerous complaints that have been filed by the people on the menace caused by dogs in the town. The new notification also intends to keep a check on vaccination and cleanliness in the city.

Statement from the Mayor

The Mayor of Ghaziabad, Asha Sharma has given a statement on the recently released norms about petting a dog. She said, “Acting on complaints filed to control the menace of dogs and promote cleanliness in the area, we have decided to keep the license fees for owning a dog at ₹5,000. If a dog is found defecating in parks, a fine of ₹500 will be imposed on the owner." Apart from this, the Municipal Corporation has also decided to keep a check on the dogs regarding vaccination, in order to prevent rabies.

Reaction of the Residents

The new law has brought a lot of resentment within the common people and pet lovers of the town. A resident of Ghaziabad, Gurpreet Kaur said, “This decision of the corporation will make it difficult for people with low monthly income and if the fee is to be kept, then that amount should be reduced." She further added that those people who adopt dogs will now think twice before owning a pet. Delhi and Gurugram, on the other hand, have already notified rules regarding pet ownership. The annual registration fee is ₹500 in both Delhi and Gurugram. However, the implementation of these new rules in Ghaziabad will be a big challenge for the municipal corporation to prepare pet lovers and owners for registration.
