Union Home Minister Amit Shah is going to address a gathering on the NRC and Citizenship Amendment Bill at the Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata on October 1
Home Minister Amit Shah is going to address a gathering on the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and Citizenship Amendment Bill at Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata on October 1. This development has come days after West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee met the Home Minister in Delhi on September 19 and discussed the issue of NRC.
During the meeting with Amit Shah on September 19, Mamata Banerjee handed over a letter to him, expressing concerns about the 19 lakh individuals who have been excluded from the final list of National Registrar of Citizens of India (NRC) in Assam. Addressing the media after meeting the Home Minister, the West Bengal CM had said:
"19 lakh people who have been excluded from NRC in Assam, there are a lot of Hindi speaking and Bengali speaking people along with a lot of Assamese and other genuine cases. All the genuine voters who have been excluded from the list should get a chance to feel that they are very much Indian."
Amit Shah on NRC
Earlier in September, speaking at the fourth conclave of the North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) in Assam, Home Minister Amit Shah had also reiterated Modi government's aim to expel all illegal immigrants not just from Assam but from the entire country. He went to assure the people of Assam that no illegal migrant will be able to enter Assam or any other state in the northeast.
"All states, especially Asssam have expressed worry about the NRC (National Register of Citizens). A lot of people think many people were left out of NRC. I want to assure that no illegal migrant could enter Assam or any other state in the northeast. Our intention is to expel illegal immigrants from the entire country and not just Assam," Amit Shah said.
NRC final list
On August 31, the final NRC list for Assam was published which revealed that a total of 3,11,21,004 persons were eligible for inclusion in the final list. It, however, left out 19,06,657 persons, including those who did not submit their claims. NRC aims to segregate Indian citizens living in Assam from those who had illegally entered the state from Bangladesh.
