With India celebrating its 73rd Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday addressed the nation from the Red Fort in New Delhi and hoisted the national flag. Beginning his speech by paying tribute to the martyrs and those who fought for the freedom of the nation, and then gave a 10-week report card of his new government, which he said has taken various steps in different spheres, laying particular emphasis on the Triple Talaq law and the abrogation of Article 370. He then spoke on India's fight against terror and how India is playing an important role to fight those exporting terror around the region.
Speaking about the importance of water conservation, PM Modi said, "At many places, people not getting drinking water even today. They need to travel a lot to get drinking water. We have to provide water to every house. We are working towards it. I am announcing from the Red Fort that we will go ahead with 'Jal Jeevan Mission' to ensure that drinking water reaches every house in the country."
PM Modi also sent a strong message for the farmers of the country. "I want to request the farmers today, this land is our mother. But have we really thought about our motherland's health? The way we are using chemical fertilizers, pesticides... we are ruining our land. As a farmer, I don't have the right to ruin or hurt our motherland. Can we 10%, 20% or 25% reduce the use of chemical fertilizers or if possible do-away with it completely? It will be a great service to our country. We have to save our land. And I have faith in our people that our farmers will listen to me and do the needful," he said.
