Independence Day Speech: PM Modi launches war against single-use plastic, sets October 2 target for citizens

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on the occasion of the 72nd Independence Day from the Red Fort on Thursday, August 15. During his speech, the PM said that he believes India will soon be able to declare itself free from open defecation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on the occasion of the 72nd Independence Day from the Red Fort on Thursday, August 15. He emphasized several important aspects and spoke about the welfare of the nation. He said that following the 'Swachh Bharat' mission, he believes India will soon be able to declare itself free from open defecation. 

"In 2014 from Red Fort, I spoke about 'Swacchata'(cleanliness). In 2019, I believe India will soon be able to declare itself free from open defecation," PM Modi said in his speech.

He further spoke about plastic pollution and urged fellow countrymen to quit the use of the same.

"Can we free India from single-use plastic? The time for implementing such an idea has come. May teams be mobilised to work in this direction. Let a significant step be made on 2nd October," the Prime Minister said.

PM Modi further invited industries and startups to help recycle plastic.

The Prime Minister highlighted many other important aspects like poverty and terrorism and said that the government is dedicated towards the development of the country. He also announced that the government has decided to invest Rs 100 lakh crore on the country's modern infrastructure. He concluded his Independence Day address by chanting 'Vande Mataram' and reciting the National Anthem.
