A day after the Indian government declared Jamaat-e-Islami (J&K) as an ‘unlawful association’ under the UAPA act, Republic TV has accessed details which reveals the group is the driving force behind the radical ideology in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

It has been found out that the JeI (J&K) - which is not related to the JeI - is responsible for the formation and growth of terror outfits like Hizbul Mujahideen. They had been providing all kind of support, be it logistics, funds, shelter to the organization headed by Syed Salahuddin -- who is also the chairman of United Jehad Council and presently hiding in Pakistan.

Further, their relation with pro-separatists and those indulging in anti-national activities in the Valley has also been confirmed in the details examined by Republic TV.

In the past, the JeI (J&K) has been banned on two occasions -- once by the J&K state government in 1975 and once by the Central government in 1990.

It has also been found out that the All Party Hurriyat Conference - better known just as Hurriyat - came into existence because of the Jamaat-e-Islami (J&K). The latter has also been found to be having pro-Pakistan agenda, and has had involvement in Pakistan sponsored violence in Jammu and Kashmir.

On Thursday, the Centre issued a notification the organization as an ‘unlawful association’ under Section 3 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

The JeI (J&K) though rejected all claims that they had any relations with terrorist groups. In its statement, they condemned the detention of their members saying "...The move is a well-designed conspiracy to pave way for further uncertainty in the region".

The Jamaat claimed that during the intervening night of February 22 and February 23, police and other agencies launched a mass arrest drive and raided many houses in the Valley, wherein dozens of its central and district level leaders were arrested, including its Ameer (chief) Jamaat Dr Abdul Hamid Fayaz and advocate Zahid Ali (spokesperson).

The Jamaat cadres were picked up from various places, including Anantnag, Pahalgham, Dialgam, Tral -- all in south Kashmir. The Jamaat termed the raids as "fishy" at a time when the Supreme Court is to hear a petition regarding Article 35A of the Constitution, which grants special status to Jammu and Kashmir.
