JNU admin clears 'rumours' about change in rules spread by students

No new curfew restrictions or dress code has been introduced, said the administration of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Friday. In a press note, it said that some motivated students are spreading false rumours about Inter Hostel Administration (IHA) Committee approving a new hostel manual draft in which new curfew timings in the hostel and the dress code in the dining hall have been freshly introduced. JNU has clarified that there is no difference between the old rule and the new rule.

However, according to old hostel manual advisory, residents and guests were advised to come to the dining hall "properly" dressed, while in the new hostel manual, the word 'properly' has been replaced with 'appropriately'. The JNU administration said that both the words are 'synonyms'. The administration further said that since there is no dress code prescribed either in the old hostel manual or the new hostel manual, it's on the individual to decide what's appropriate when coming to dine in the dining hall.

Increase in Hostel rent to provide better facilities

The Inter Hostel Administration Committee of JNU has increased the Hostel room rent from Rs 20 per month to Rs 600 per month and Rs 10 per month to Rs 300 per month for single-seater and double seater rooms respectively. The committee has further decided that from now onwards students will have to pay the utility and service charges as per actuals. The university has said that this revision has been done to provide better facilities to the students.

These decisions have been taken by JNU administration after a meeting of the Inter Hostel Administration committee which took place on October 28. High octane drama ensued in the campus on the day of the meeting when a group of students blocked an ambulance and stopped doctors from meeting the Dean of Students Professor Umesh Kadam after he fell sick on campus during the protest.
