Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, on Thursday, talking about the current flood situation in the State, said that that the state has enough funds to implement effective flood relief measures and denied opposition's claim that the Centre failed to release additional funds for the same.
'The allegations on the Centre are not true'
While speaking to the media on the issue in Bengaluru, the CM said, "The Opposition's allegations that the Centre has not given funds is not true. Congress does not need to confuse people about the funds from the Central Government. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was outside the country, now he has come back. I have spoken to Home Minister Amit Shah about the prevailing situation in the State.” He also added, “The assistance of all kinds are being given to all areas affected due to natural disasters. We have already released funds for rehabilitation in the State.”
Yediyurappa's statement came just a day after the state units of the Congress and Janata Dal (Secular), while speaking about the issue, accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of adopting an "indifferent behaviour" towards the State on the issue of extending flood relief funds. The criticism came with PM Modi’s Twitter post about the flood fury in Bihar and stated that he was in talks with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar about the prevailing situation. PM Modi, in his tweet, had also stated that the Central Government is ready to provide any assistance.
Flood fury
Many Indian states including Kerala, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar have been experiencing heavy rainfalls that have led to flood-like situations in the past few weeks. Bihar’s extreme situation has been worsening by the day. On September 28, the State had received 84.5 mm rainfall against the normal of 5.7 mm. Areas including Samastipur, Bhagalpur, Begusarai, and Bhojpur districts received rainfall above 130 mm in 24 hours, affecting lives to a high level. Capital city Patna is worst affected. Around 55 people have died and a red alert by the IMD remains active in the State.
