Amid the heavy rains ravaging the states of Kerala, Maharashtra, and several others, a new-born baby was rescued by the Army in the morning of August 10 in Wayanad.

The rescue operations teams have been working relentlessly in their effort to evacuate the people from the crisis zone. They were seen rescuing senior citizens, women, children, and others by carrying them on their shoulders or palanquins. According to the Army, around 6,000 persons have been rescued and more than 15,000 have been evacuated from the flood-affected states.

However, despite the presence of as many as  24 relief camps and over eight Engineer Task Forces (ETFs) deployed in various districts like Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kannur and Kozhikode, the death toll in Kerala is risen to 42.

Twenty people have been killed in Kozhikode and Malappuram districts, and nine have died in Wayanad in rain-related incidents since August 8.

On Thursday, Skymet had predicted more rains, on account of which CM Pinarayi Vijayan tweeted about the areas where red alerts have been issued - Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode & Wayanad - and urged citizens to evacuate if the situation worsens.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had on Friday also spoken to Prime Minister Narendra Modi narrating to him the flood situation in Kerala and sought assistance for those affected in the state, including in his constituency Wayanad.

The deluge continues in the state even as it grapples to fully recover from the extensive damage caused by the floods of August 2018 that claimed over 400 lives and left lakhs of people homeless.
