Mamata Banerjee calls Nobel Laureate Abhijit Banerjee, 'Abhishek Babu'

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday committed a gaffe by mentioning the Noble Prize Laureate Abhijit Banerjee as 'Abhishek Babu'.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee committed a gaffe by mentioning the Noble Prize Laureate Abhijit Banerjee as 'Abhishek Babu' on Wednesday, October 16. According to reports, while speaking to the reporters, Mamata Banerjee in a slip of the tongue stated:

"In West Bengal, there are people like Amartya Sen, Mother Teresa who have won the Nobel Prize and now Abhishek Babu (referring to Abhijit Banerjee) has also got a Nobel Prize. Sourav Ganguly got the opportunity (BCCI President post). Bengal is proud and is moving forward." Further, she repeated the same name while informing the reporters about her plan to meet Banerjee's family. 

Mamata Banerjee congratulates on Twitter

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed her wishes on Twitter. Along with it, Banerjee on Wednesday met the family members of Abhijit Banerjee at their residence in Kolkata. Local media reported that the West Bengal CM declared that more people like Abhijit Banerjee should continue their work for the society. 

Abhijit Banerjee wins Nobel Prize

The Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology won the Nobel Prize in Economics on October 14. He pursued his education at the University of Calcutta, Jawarharlal Nehru University, and acquired his PhD in 1988 from Harvard University. Banerjee won the award for his work on eradicating poverty, along with two others.

Other winners

Along with Abhijit Banerjee, two others who received the 2019 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel award are - Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer. Duflo is also the wife of Laureate Abhijit Banerjee. The three of them were awarded the Nobel Prize for their work on eradicating global poverty. According to reports, the key to their research is to take the issue of poverty and break it down into smaller questions which can be more credibly answered. The research conducted by this year’s Laureates has been proved to improve the world's ability to fight poverty.
