The Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee is likely to visit the Jadavpur University Vice-Chancellor at the AMRI Hospital on Friday. The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Suranjan Das, was allegedly attacked in the face-off at the University and was hospitalised. On Thursday, the Governor had spoken to the Vice-Chancellor and told him that it was improper of him to leave the premises and not take immediate action against the ruckus created by the students. He also called up CM Mamata Banerjee and Chief Secretary Malay Kumar De and asked them to intervene in the situation.
Babul Supriyo alleges inaction by the state government
Union Minister Babul Supriyo alleged that those who stoked the ruckus which led to gheraoing of the BJP MP at the Jadavpur University for over a few hours were outsiders. He also said that after the situation worsened after 3.00 pm and people began assaulting him, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, the state's Chief Secretary, the Director-General of Police, the Commissioner of Police were informed. Supriyo alleges that they did not take any action despite being apprised of the worsening situation at the Jadavpur University campus.
The former singer also alleged that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had advised the Governor to not do anything about the situation.
He said, "I hear from very very reliable sources, from journalists who were in Delhi with Mamata Banerjee at that time that she advised the Governor not to go there and to leave me alone with whatever was happening." Babul Supriyo also alleged that when the Governor asked the student leaders to come forward and speak about the incident, no one came forward because there were no student leaders and probably no students as well. "The hecklers were people from outside and not from Jadavpur University." said the minister.
Lockdown in Jadavpur University campus
Union Minister Babul Supriyo on Thursday had visited the Jadavpur University to attend an ABVP event where he was allegedly assaulted by the students who heckled him inside the University. Matters turned worse as Babul Supriyo was stuck inside the campus for at least three hours. He sat on the media OB Van bonnet. The West Bengal Governor and the CRPF rushed to the University and the Kolkata Police too were outside the gate with its force.
A situation of lockdown prevailed in the University as lights were turned off and Supriyo managed to go along with the Governor Jagdeep Dhankar after he intervened. Supriyo and Dhankar tried to leave in a vehicle but were stopped by the protestors. Today, both the SFI and the ABVP have called for protests on the Jadavpur University violence.
