On Sunday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wished the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy on his 80th birthday. Writing on microblogging website Twitter, she wished Swamy a long and healthy life. The President of India nominated Swamy as a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament in 2016. A founder of the Janata Party, he continued to serve as its President till 2013. Subsequently, he joined the BJP but did not contest the 2014 Lok Sabha election.
Swamy and the Ram temple
Swamy celebrated his birthday by offering prayers at the makeshift Ram temple in Ayodhya. Currently, on a two-day visit, he also met prominent seers in the region. The 80-year-old leader has repeatedly pointed out the need for building a Ram temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya. A 16th-century mosque namely, Babri Masjid was demolished at that spot on December 6, 1992. Interacting with the media, Swamy reiterated that the temple which was located at the birthplace of Lord Ram could not be removed.
'SC has ruled in favour of fundamental rights'
He asserted that the fundamental rights of Hindus to worship at the temple had precedence over the property rights of Muslims. The BJP leader opined that whenever there was a clash between the two, the Supreme Court (SC) had always ruled in favour of fundamental rights. He further added that the construction of the Ram temple would begin after the favourable verdict of the SC in October later this year. Presently, the apex court is conducting a day-to-day hearing into the case pertaining to the ownership of the 2.77 acres of land in Ayodhya. Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Bobde, Justice D Y Chandrachud, Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice S A Nazeer are also part of the Constitution bench hearing the matter.
