The document accessed appears to be a sale deal relating to the Ceejay House property of Millenium Developers in Worli over which Iqbal Mirchi's aides had been arrested. Additionally, minutes after Republic's big breaking expose, sources have confirmed to Republic that the ED will question Praful Patel in connection to his alleged link with the late drug lord Iqbal Mirchi. As the ED inquires the link between the two, here is all you need to know about Iqbal Mirchi:
- Iqbal Mirchi, a.k.a Muhammed Iqbal Memon was the right-hand man of underworld criminal and terrorist Dawood Ibrahim. Mirchi had a major role to play in handling the Dawood’s narcotics syndicate.
- Iqbal Mirchi was an accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had tried to get Mirchi extradited to India from London in the Mumbai blasts case but remained unsuccessful despite an intervention by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
- Iqbal Mirchi was reportedly among the world's top-50 drug barons. He had been issued an Interpol Red Corner Notice in 1994 on CBI's request. However, major cases against him were shut at the time due to the 'lack of evidence.'
- Iqbal Mirchi was arrested by officers from Scotland Yard on charges of terrorism and drugs in April 1995. However, Scotland Yard's investigation ended in 1999 after it found no evidence of criminal activity against him. He was then granted indefinite leave to remain in the UK.
- Iqbal Mirchi reportedly resided in a large six-bedroom home in an exclusive part of Hornchurch, a town in Essex, northeast of London. He died of a heart attack in London at the age of 63, in 2013.
- Though dead in 2013, Mirchi's name popped up in the Panama Papers in 2016. He was allegedly involved in an offshore company called Country Properties Limited responsible to purchase properties in countries like Cyprus, Turkey, Morocco, and Spain.
- Earlier this week, an investigation carried out by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) revealed that Mirchi amassed various properties in India and overseas from the proceeds of crime generated through various illegal offences. The agency has identified several properties in Mumbai “beneficially owned by Mirchi and his family member”.
Republic TV accesses political link
Republic TV has exclusively accessed a company document of M/s Millennium Developers Pvt Ltd which indicates that NCP leader Praful Patel and Varsha Patel were shareholders of this company as of March 31, 2016. According to agency sources, a part of the proceeds of the sale of these properties was routed through fake bank accounts opened in a bank in Chennai. These revelations have been refuted by NCP on the ground that Ceejay House is not owned by an individual.
ED arrests Dawood's aide
Previously on Friday, in a major crackdown on D-gang, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested two people – Haroon Yusuf and Ranjeet Singh Bindra – from Mumbai. The arrested people allegedly facilitated a land deal worth Rs 200 crore for gangster Iqbal Mirchi. While Yusuf allegedly transferred the money into a trust and facilitated the deal, Bindra brokered the land deal. ED which is probing into old cases, found that Mirchi through his associates, from the proceeds of crime, had purchased three properties belonging to Sir Mohammed Yusuf Trust in September 1986 for an amount of 6.5 lakh.
