Noida Authority installed a plastic bottle crusher machine at the authority campus to raise awareness about plastic waste management. The step comes in order to combat increasing pollution caused by plastic, which takes a long time to be biodegradable.
The Noida Authority CEO, Ritu Maheshwari inaugurated the machine on Friday and later said, "We will install two more machines within the next two days, one at Sector 18 market and another at Brahmaputra market here. These initiatives are being taken under the city's solid waste management project. The purpose of this initiative is that waste, be it solid, hazardous or plastic waste should be scientifically disposed off. The crushed plastic is recycled by the vendors, which is later used to make reusable plastic products or tiles. To process the dry plastic waste we will open material recovery facility centres in future".
Rising air pollution in the capital
Apart from land pollution and plastic menace, Delhi has been suffering heavily because of the air pollution in the city, with many describing it as a gas chamber. On Friday, a Supreme Court-mandated panel declared a public health emergency in the Delhi-NCR region and banned construction activity till November 5. As pollution level in the region entered the "severe-plus" category, the Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority also banned the bursting of crackers during the winter season. The situation has been similar over the past one week and has been only getting worse by the day.
The Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal distributed masks to the school children in order to ensure and decrease the impact of the hazardous and toxic air quality. The CM has also decided to bring back the Odd-Even scheme in order to decrease the pollution in the city and it will come into effect from November 4 to November 15.
The highly toxic air got a mention by German Chancellor Angela Merkel as well, who is in the country on an official visit. On Saturday morning, in her remarks at an event, she said, “We have launched Indo-German partnership for green urban mobility. We have earmarked $1 billion towards this. We will also earmark 200 million euros to reform the bus sector in Tamil Nadu. Whoever looked at pollution in Delhi yesterday would find very good arguments to replace diesel buses with electric buses”.
