Writer and activist Taslima Nasreen has backed Nusrat Jahan for attending Durga Puja and furthermore, the writer has gone on to give a befitting reply to those who called her out for doing so. In a tweet, Nasreen pointed out that Mamata Banerjee was called secular for wearing a burkha while Jahan is being attacked for taking part in rituals that don’t belong to her religion. While drawing a comparison between the two scenarios, she said that the Islamic clerics celebrated when Banerjee prayed to Allah and that they are unhappy when Jahan is now attending ceremonies of a different faith.

Her tweet came after Trinamool MP Nusrat Jahan was targeted by Muslim cleric Mufti Asad Kasmi from the Itehaad Ulema-hind for celebrating the festival of Durga Puja with her in-laws in Kolkata.

Kasmi, while speaking to media, claimed that Nusrat Jahan has performed a forbidden ("haram") act by performing Puja on the occasion of Durga Puja. The Muslim cleric further went on to demand that Nusrat Jahan change her name, targeting her for marrying a non-Muslim man. He claimed that by performing Durga Puja, the Trinamool MP had defamed Islam and Muslims.
