Nusrat Jahan, Trinamool MP from Kolkata, was recently seen celebrating Durga Puja for which she was targeted by Muslim cleric Mufti Asad Kasmi from the Itehaad Ulema-hind. However, this is not the first time the actor turned politician faced criticisms from hardliners. On multiple occasions, Jahan has been targeted - for her clothes or for marrying someone from a different community. Mentioned below are the times when the actor-politician Jahan was targeted.
Nusrat Jahan: Target for hardliners
1. The actor-turned-politician was earlier targeted by Muslim clerics for visiting the ISKCON temple at Kolkata on the occasion of the Jagannath Rath Yatra. The clerics slammed her stating that she would now have to renounce Islam for visiting a Hindu temple. Jahan responded by stating that irrespective of the religion, people should celebrate all the festivals together. She further added that celebrating all the festivals together showcases 'peace and unity'.
2. Nusrat Jahan was earlier targeted for sporting 'sindoor'. She was seen dressed in a white saree during her oath-taking ceremony in the Parliament on June 25. She was also slammed for wearing bangles, with her hands covered in designs of henna. Her marriage with a Jain business and her attire during the oath-taking ceremony became a subject of controversy with the Fatwa-happy Darul-Uloom issuing a fatwa against her. Responding to the controversy, Jahan stated that she is a part of 'inclusive India' hence, would not be paying attention to the comments made by the hardliners.
3. For Jahan's first visit to the Parliament after her victory in the Lok Sabha elections, she was dressed in western clothes which made a lot of people unhappy. Hardliners criticised her for posing with Mimi Chakraborty outside the parliament. Undaunter, however, both the actor-turned-politicians held their ID cards as they smiled for the cameras.
