Earlier on Monday, the Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi PK Mishra on Monday conducted a review of the measures taken by the states of Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi to combat the menace of air pollution. He sought details from the respective Chief Secretaries regarding the measures taken in cases of fire and crop burning in the last 24 hours. Focusing on the need to pre-empt the situation, he opined that a mechanism for immediate action had to be created. Furthermore, he also appreciated the efforts of everyone in this regard. Mishra mentioned that after taking short-term measures, a system would be put in place for a permanent long-term solution.
Cyclone Maha
The present danger facing western India, especially Gujarat is the Cyclone Maha which is expected to make a landfall on the coastal region of the state between Devbhumi-Dwarka district and the Union Territory of Daman and Diu in the early hours of November 7. 15 additional teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and many Naval units have been put on standby for any eventuality. Both Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and the Union Cabinet Secretary have taken stock of the administrative preparedness in the current situation. The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted that Cyclone Maha is expected to weaken from a ‘severe cyclonic storm’ to a ‘cyclonic storm’.
