The Gujarati New Year
While the 5-day festival of Diwali has already commenced, the Gujarati New Year also known as ‘Bestu Varas’ is usually celebrated on the 4th day. It coincides with the day of Govardhan Pooja and is celebrated on the day after ‘Badi Diwali’. As per the Vikram Samvat Hindu calendar, it falls on Shukla Paksha Pratipada in the month of Kartik. It is an important festival for the Gujarati community. At this time of the year, Gujarati businessmen and traders close their old account books and open their new ones. On this occasion, the account book, known as Chopda is worshipped in the presence of Goddess Lakshmi. There is a belief in Gujarati culture that this practice would make the new year profitable. Furthermore, people tend to buy new clothes, decorate their house and distribute sweets on this day.
