PM Modi hails historic Block Development Council elections in J&K
PM Modi on Friday hailed the Block Development Council (BDC) elections which were conducted for the first-ever time in Jammu and Kashmir on October 24.

On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the Block Development Council (BDC) elections which were conducted Highlighting the huge turnout in the election, he also pointed out that the elections were held in a very peaceful manner. The PM lauded the people of Jammu and Kashmir for their “unwavering faith” in democracy at the grassroots level.

For the first time since 1947, Block Development Council elections were held in Jammu, Kashmir, Leh and Ladakh on the 24th.
The polls witnessed a historic turnout of 98%. There were over 1080 candidates in the fray in 310 blocks.

Thereafter, he congratulated all the victorious candidates and observed that it marked the “dawn” of new youthful leadership in the region. Furthermore, PM Modi linked this development to the scrapping of special status to J&K. He thanked the members of Parliament for their support of the government’s legislation in this regard.

Successful BDC polls
BDC elections were held on Thursday, which was followed by the declaration of results in the evening. While independent candidates won 217 seats, BJP and Congress candidates won 81 seats and one seat respectively. On the other hand, the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party won 8 seats. There were 26,629 electors in total across the 22 districts of Jammu and Kashmir. According to the J&K Electoral Officer, Shailendra Kumar, no untoward incident was reported. In fact, voter turnout was as high as 98.3% with Srinagar recording a 100% turnout. This election was held using the ballot boxes. However, parties such as the National Conference (NC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) boycotted the polls.
