As a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote an op-ed titled, 'Why India and the World Need Gandhi' in the New York Times. In his tribute, PM Modi remembered Gandhi and wrote what independence meant to the Mahatma. He wrote about the various struggles and movements that Gandhi initiated for the Independence of India. PM Modi also quoted Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his remarks on India and Gandhi.
"Gandhi emphasized on duties," says Modi
PM Modi in the op-ed column of NY Times wrote, "For him, independence was not absence of external rule. He saw a deep link between political independence and personal empowerment. He envisioned a world where every citizen has dignity and prosperity. When the world spoke about rights, Gandhi emphasized duties." He emphasized on the need of personal empowerment which would lead to independence ultimately. Modi spoke about the time when Gandhi used to write for the Young India journal and said that Gandhi firmly believed that if everyone discharges their duties, rights will not be far away. PM Modi also wrote that the public participation in Gandhian struggle is what sets it apart from the numerous mass movements that have happened in the world. He said that despite enjoying such massive public support Gandhi never held administrative or elected office, he was never tempted by power.
"India is doing its bit," says PM Modi
In the op-ed, PM Modi also wrote about how the government in India is doing its bit to fulfil Gandhi's dreams. He highlighted that India is amongst the fastest countries to eliminate poverty and the sanitation efforts are recognized by leaders across the globe. "India is also taking the lead in harnessing renewable resources through efforts like the International Solar Alliance, which has brought together several nations to leverage solar energy for a sustainable future. We want to do even more, with the world and for the world," the Prime Minister added.
