National Press Day is celebrated on November 16 to commemorate the establishment of the Press Council of India. Formed in 1966, the Press Council keeps a check on the quality of reportage provided by the Indian press. It also ensures that journalistic objectivity is not compromised due to "influence or threats of any extraneous factors." Union Minister for Information and Broadcast and BJP leader Prakash Javadekar took to Twitter and tweeted, "Press freedom is the essence of a vibrant democracy."
The Union Minister's complete tweet:
On the occassion of #NationalPressDay - greetings to the Media fraternity. Press freedom is essence of a vibrant democracy. This was trampled upon by the #Congress during emergency. We are ensuring full freedom to the press. pic.twitter.com/k3C8Hv9eHn
