Puducherry CM declares schools will remain shut due to incessant rains

Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy on Wednesday announced that schools, both government and private will remain closed on Thursday due to heavy rainfall

Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy on Wednesday, October 30, announced that schools, both government and private will remain closed on Thursday due to heavy rainfall in the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Konkan and Goa and South Interior Karnataka for Thursday. The Chief Minister took to Twitter to announce the holiday following incessant rainfall.

Educational institutions shut across Tamil Nadu

All schools and colleges in six districts across Tamil Nadu remained closed on Wednesday owning to heavy rainfall in the region. According to the state government, schools and colleges in Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Theni, Virudhunagar, Vellore, and Ramanathapuram were shut on Wednesday. All schools in Madurai district were also closed following heavy rains in the region.

Speaking to the media the  District Collector of Ramanathapuram, Veeraragavarav said, "All education institutes will remain closed in the Ramanathapuram district following heavy rains lashing across the district." 

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Tamil Nadu is very likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated places in the state. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning very likely at isolated places over Tamil Nadu has also been predicted by the weather agency.

Earlier, IMD also predicted heavy rainfall at isolated places over Lakshadweep and Puducherry on Wednesday. Heavy Rainfall for Kerala, Karaikal, and Mahe is also predicted. "Heavy Rainfall at isolated places over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Telangana and Coastal, and South Interior Karnataka," IMD stated in its warning Bulletin.

IMD has also predicted thunderstorms with fast winds over Vidharbha, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and the Konkan regions. The agency said the sea conditions over the west-central and east-central are predicted to be rough over Southeast Arabian Sea. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea. "Under the influence of system over Comorin area and adjoining Equitorial India Ocean, heavy to very rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Lakshadweep and heavy rainfall over Rayalseema and Karnataka up to October 31," the statement added.
