Railways pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi in a unique manner
Indian Railways are celebrating Gandhi Jayanti by painting over 15 diesel locomotives with Mahatma Gandhi's picture on the backdrop of the national tricolour
Indian Railways' Central Railway zone paid their tribute to Mahatma Gandhi in a unique way for the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. They plan to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi by painting diesel locomotives with Mahatma Gandhi's picture on the backdrop of the national tricolour. Indian Railways has also planned to celebrate Gandhi Jayanti as 'Community Day.'
A total of 15 diesel locomotives that have been painted are presently running on the Mumbai-Pune and Mumbai-Konkan route. The Central Railway zone had started working on these diesel locomotives about 2 months ago. In addition to this, one more locomotive has been decorated and attached to a train from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus as a mark of respect to the Mahatma Gandhi. Apart from these locomotives, the railways have also organised other ways to commemorate 150 years of Mahatma Gandhi.
'Community Day'
The Indian Railways has also planned to mark Gandhi Jayanti as ‘Community Day’ under which the Railway officials and stakeholders will participate in ‘shramdaan’ (Voluntary labour). The Railway Board has also proposed to set up 150 small nurseries on Railway land adjacent to railway tracks in metro cities. A special exhibition has been organised at the National Rail Museum for a week on the journey 'From Mohan Das to Mahatma' all the events connected to railways.
According to reports, earlier last month, the Minister of State for Railways Suresh Angadi has advised the Indian Railways to have as many as 150 railway stations with green certifications to mark 150 years of Mahatma Gandhi. As of now, there are only 12 green-certified railway stations in India.
