Vasudev Devnani, the MLA from Ajmer and the former education minister wrote to the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah requesting to implement National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Rajasthan as well. NRC was executed in Assam where 3.11 crore people were included in the final list that was published but 19.06 lakh people were excluded. The MLA from Ajmer said that sources found many Bangladeshi people residing in Ajmer, Rajasthan which has increased the disruption in the law and order of the city. This is the reason why former education minister has insisted on putting NRC in effect in Rajasthan. Vasudev Devnani wrote to the Home Minister that many Bangladeshis come to Ajmer to visit the Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti and pay their homage but end up staying back instead of going to Bangladesh.

NRC Final List Out:19.06 Lakh People Excluded in Assam

According to the final NRC published in Assam, out of the total 3.3 crore applicants, 3.11 crore were included in the list. The names of about 19 lakh residents were excluded from it. Those who failed to make it to the final NRC list have been given 120 days to appeal against their exclusion at the Foreigners Tribunals. If not satisfied with the verdict of the tribunals, they will have the option to move the High Court and the Supreme Court for redress. BJP leaders have assured the people excluded from the list that justice will be done and their appeals will be heard in the court.

Legal recourse for people excluded from NRC

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has informed that a person whose name is not in the final NRC list is not automatically designated as a foreigner. Only a Foreigners Tribunal (FT) can declare a person as a ‘foreigner’. Hence, the persons excluded from the list can file an appeal in the FTs. The time limit for filing an appeal has been increased from 60 to 120 days. The individual can appeal to the High Court and the Supreme Court if they lose the appeal with the FT. The Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal has also clarified that individuals excluded from the list will not face harassment from the state government due to NRC.
