Rajnath Singh's Bangkok visit
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Bangkok attended the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Defence Ministers’ Meet. Defence Ministers from ASEAN countries — Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Russia, and the US — gathered at Singapore for the 12th ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting (ADMM) and the 5th ADMM-Plus, hosted by the island city-state. On Sunday, Rajnath Singh met his US counterpart Mark T Esper in Bangkok. This was the first meeting between the two leaders since Esper was confirmed as the US Secretary of Defence in July.
On Monday, Singh pitched for strong global action against terrorist safe havens and steps to choke terror financing. Singh arrived in Singapore on Monday night after concluding his visit to Bangkok. The two-day visit would witness him attending the India-Singapore Defence Ministers' Dialogue and calling on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
Hitting out at countries using terrorism to pursue political goals, at the ASEAN meet Rajnath Singh said, terrorist safe havens will have to be eliminated and their financing channels to be choked to thwart their cross-border movement to ensure sustainable regional security. He said that some states were using terrorism to pursue political goals, making regional security vulnerable. Emphasising the need to protect the rights of states that are not a party to these negotiations, he expressed hope that the situation will remain stable, without the use or threat of use of force or militarisation of the region.
