Senior-most judges from Jamaica and Bhutan invited to share the dais with CJI Bobde

In an unprecedented scene, Court no. 1 of the Supreme Court on Monday witnessed the senior-most judges of Bhutan and Jamaica share the dais with the newly appointed Chief Justice of India Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde. CJI Bobde on Monday took oath as the 47th Chief Justice of India in a ceremony organized at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi. President of India Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath for Justice Bobde while former Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were both present to witness the occasion. Justice Bobde officially assumed office at 9:30 am.

Congratulations pour in for CJI Bobde

The Supreme Court, therefore, assembled for the proceedings after a delay of one hour from usual court timings. Surprisingly, when the bench in Court 1 assembled at 11:30, CJI Bobde was seen not only sharing the bench with Justices Surya Kant and B.R. Gavai of the Supreme Court but also Chief Justice of Jamaica Justice Bryan Sykes and Bhutanese Justice Kuenlay Tshering. CJI Bobde was also congratulated by the members of the Bar for being appointed as the 47th Chief Justice in the presence of his near and dear ones before the bench began hearing cases for the day. “We wish a fruitful and a successful tenure to Chief Justice Bobde,” said Rakesh Khanna, Senior Advocate and President of the Supreme Court Bar Association.

Landmark judgments

Justice Bobde will serve a 17-month tenure as the Chief Justice of India before his retirement on April 23, 2021. He was elevated as a Supreme Court judge in April 2013 and in the course of the past 6 years, he has been a part of several landmark judgments including the Constitution Bench verdict on the Ayodhya dispute, the 9-judge bench historic ruling recognizing the right to privacy as a fundamental right for Indian citizens and the debatable Aadhaar judgment. Justice Bobde was also appointed to head the inquiry panel in the case regarding the sexual harassment charges levied against the former Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi. Justice Bobde also serves as the Chancellor of Maharashtra National Law University, both at Mumbai and Nagpur campuses.
