Commenting on the ongoing impasse over the formation of government in Maharashtra, Congress leader and former Lok Sabha MP Shatrughan Sinha on Tuesday stated that this was a “make or break” situation for the Congress and like-minded parties. He hoped that a “right decision” would be taken by those leaders concerned for the people of Maharashtra and democracy in India. Maintaining that there was very little time left, he urged Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Sharad Pawar and the Congress leadership to take a final call on government formation. Furthermore, Sinha contended that the entire nation was waiting with great anticipation for a government to be formed in Maharashtra.

Power tussle in Maharashtra

The results of the Maharashtra Assembly elections were declared on October 24. While BJP secured 105 seats, its alliance partner Shiv Sena (SS) won in 56 constituencies. However, BJP fell 17 seats short of its 2014 election tally, which was below its expectations. So, SS has been trying to leverage its position by demanding the Chief Minister’s post on a rotational basis. Since the declaration of results, both parties have been welcoming the support of Independents. Fadnavis has already announced that BJP was expecting the backing of a majority of the Independents and smaller parties. The widening of the rift was indicated by the two allies meeting the Governor separately last week. SS Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut has upped the ante with every passing day, hinting at the possibility of his party seeking the support of NCP and Congress if BJP didn’t accept their demands.
