Amidst all the hue and cry seeking the Ayodhya land title case to be fast-tracked and judgment be pronounced as soon as possible, the Supreme Court on Monday adjourned the matter and ordered it to be listed in the first week of January for fixing a date for hearing.

The three-judge bench headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi has decided the matter will be taken up in the first week of 2019, and it will then pronounce when the hearing on the case will begin. Despite the centre's plea to take up the case after Diwali break, the apex court stated that no urgent date can be given as of now due to other priorities.

It may come as a setback to those who were hoping for construction of Ram temple to start before 2019. Ever since the the SC, then headed by CJI Dipak Misra, pronounced in September that the matter would not be referred to a larger bench, a number of individuals and groups upped the ante to build the Ram Mandir on Ram Janmabhoomi.

A couple of days before the apex court decided to adjourn the matter, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath had urged the court to allow the construction of the Ram Mandir, while stating that the topmost court shouldn't discriminate in giving decisions.

“There should be no discrimination. If the Supreme Court can give its verdict on the Sabarimala Temple, then we appeal that a decision on the Ram Mandir should also be taken as soon as possible. This is best for peace in the country. Moreover, the issue of Ram Janmabhoomi is not about politics, it is about religious sentiments,” Yogi Adityanath said on Saturday during an event.

Earlier on October 25, the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) had also dared the Supreme Court on Ram Mandir issue, stating that the saints will not wait for the top court’s verdict in the case and the high-powered committee of the Hindu saints will impress upon the government to bring out a legislation for the construction of Ram Temple in the disputed land in Ayodhya as soon as possible.
