With less than a week left for the G20 Leaders' Summit, India is all set to welcome key delegates like US President Joe Biden, British PM Rishi Sunak, Australian PM Anthony Albanese and others arriving in Delhi.

Besides Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on the idea of a 'Global South', ever since India took over the G20 presidency, the theme of this year’s mega Global Event-- Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam- One Earth, One Family, One Future, has been gaining attention.

What is Global South?

The term Global South" refers to underdeveloped and developing nations, primarily located in the south of the developed nations.

To get a clearer picture, the South does not mean the geographical South or the Southern Hemisphere but includes countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Oceania, except Australia and New Zealand.

Justice, equality, and sustainable development are the struggles – Global South Countries have had to face over the past many decades.

Global South among Key topics

PM Modi in June, at the G20 Development Ministers’ Meeting in Varanasi, addressed the gathering virtually and said, "Development is a core issue for the Global South. The countries of the Global South were at the receiving end of the Covid pandemic. That was followed by another blow in the form of the fuel, fertiliser and food crises because of geo-political tensions. We must ensure that no one is left behind."

"It is imperative for this group to send a strong message to the world that we have an action plan to achieve this," he added.
