A woman in Bihar claimed that her husband gave her instant 'triple talaq' because she refused to become a "modern" woman and consume liquor and wear small dresses. The woman alleged that her husband used to ask her to drink liquor, wear a short dress and whenever she refused, he would assault her.
Speaking about her hardship the woman said, "I got married in 2015 and after a few days of our marriage we moved to Delhi. A few months later, he told me to be like every other modern girl in the city, wanting me to wear small dresses and go to night parties and consume liquor. When I refused, he used to beat me every day. After torturing for many years, a few days ago he asked me to leave his house and when I refused, he gave me triple talaq."
Later the victim approached the State Women Commission in this regard. The women commission sent a notice to her husband. The chairperson of Bihar State Commission for Women Dilmani Mishra, said, "The husband used to torture her and two times he forcefully aborted her child. We have taken cognizance of this case. On September 1, her husband gave her triple talaq. We have issued a notice to her husband in the case and will be calling him."
Triple talaq over carrom board
In a similar case, a man was charged for allegedly divorcing his wife through the now outlawed practice of instant triple talaq in Rajasthan's Baran district, police said on October 2. Shabroonnisha, a resident of Anta town in Baran district, filed a complaint at a police station, alleging that her husband gave her triple talaq after she refused to take a carrom board from him for their son.
According to reports, when Shabroonnisha refused, Shakil Ahmed, in a fit of rage, pronounced talaq on her thrice, said Station House Officer, Anta police station, Roop Singh. On July 30, Parliament approved legislation criminalising the practice of triple talaq, which allows a man to divorce his wife by repeating the word "talaq" three times. The Station House Officer (SHO) of the Baran district, said that Shakil Ahmed was booked under the Muslim Women Protection of Rights on Marriage Act, 2019, but he was not arrested. An investigation in the case is going on, the SHO said.
