The Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister of India, Dr. PK Mishra, presented the warrant of appointment to the next Chief Justice of India, Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde, on Tuesday. Also, the official notification from the President’s office stating Justice Bobde’s appointment as the next Chief Justice of India has been released. The notification states that Justice Bobde will assume the office and the next CJI from November 18.

The official notification released states that “In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde, Judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief Justice of India with effect from 18th November 2019.”
About next CJI
The future CJI, Justice Sharad Bobde hails from the city of Nagpur in Maharashtra, he was born on April 24, 1956, and he belongs to a family of lawyers. His father Arvind Shriniwas Bobde has served as the advocate general to the Maharashtra Government for two terms in 1980 and 1985. Sharad Bobde’s brother Vinod Bobde is also a constitutional lawyer. Apart from this, Justice Bobde has also served as the Chancellor of Maharashtra National Law University, Mumbai and Maharashtra National Law University, Nagpur.
Career Timeline
Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde, after serving as the senior advocate in 1998, was appointed as the additional judge in the Bombay High Court by 2000. He has been involved in the big cases like Adarsh housing society scam and the PIL against Lavasa Corporation Limited. Later in 2012, he was made the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court and promoted to the Supreme Court in 2013. During his tenure in the Supreme Court, he has been a part of major decisions taken by the apex court. In 2017, Justice Bobde was the part of the nine-judge bench that took the key decision of declaring the right to privacy as the fundamental right of an individual. Apart from this, along with CJI Ranjan Gogoi and other judges, Justice Bobde will also declare the verdict on the Ayodhya case before November 17.
