Briefing to the PM
Malik is believed to have apprised Modi about the prevailing situation in Jammu and Kashmir, sources said. On August 5, the central government had announced the abrogation of the special status given to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 and bifurcation of the state into Union territories. The two UTs of Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh will come into existence on October 31. While security forces have eased restrictions in many parts of the Valley, normal life continues to be affected as business establishments remained shut and only a few vehicles plied on the roads.
State since repelling of Article 370
Article 370 gave status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir, which gave special benefits to the residents of the state, such as purchasing properties. The state also had its own flag, which stopped being hoisted on the Civil Secretariat in Srinagar the state's summer capital since August 25. It was initially supposed to stop being hoisted from October 31. Since a day prior to the revocation of the Article, leaders of various political parties have been put under house arrest, including former Chief Ministers such as Mehbooba Mufti - leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Farooq Abdullah and his son Omar Abdullah, leaders of the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference. The entire region has been under a clampdown since the first week of August including internet and telecommunication restrictions. The Jammu and Kashmir Police say that they have been lifting the curfews over the state over the past few weeks. Majority of schools and colleges across the state have continued to be shut, and the few that have opened are registering only a few students.
The Central Government and security agencies have been saying that the security measures are in order to restrict the movement of the terrorists and to weed out infiltrators from across the India-Pakistan border.
