Karnataka political crisis: 11 MLAs' resignation letters in his inbox, Karnataka Speaker updates that he'll return to office on Tuesday

In another development in the Karnataka coalition government crisis, the Speaker K. R. Ramesh Kumar on Saturday has confirmed that 11 letters of resignations have been received and that he would be available in his office only on Tuesday as he has a prior appointment on Monday, as per sources. He added that he has asked his office to take the letters Earlier in the day, after citing health reasons, Kumar left from his Speaker's chambers.

Mass resignations of MLAs

In a major jolt to the Congress- JD(S) Coalition government in Karnataka, three JD(S) and five Congress MLAs had initially handed over their resignation to the state Assembly Speaker K. R. Ramesh Kumar in Bengaluru.

Sources further reported that the MLAs who have quit from their respective posts are H Vishwanath, Mahesh Kumtahalli, BC Patil, Ramesh Jarkiholi, Shivaram Hebbar, Narayan Gowda, Pratap Gowda, and Ramalinga Reddy. The resignation is reportedly yet to be accepted by the Speaker.

Apart from the above-mentioned MLAs, three more Congress MLAs-  Byrathi Basavaraj, ST Somashekar, and Munirathna also joined them in tendering their resignations. Closely following them, Soumya Reddy and Gopalaiah too tendered their resignations.

Following this mass exodus, Congress leader and Minister of Irrigation in Kumaraswamy's cabinet DK Shivakumar has reportedly torn down the resignation letter of four ministers inside the chamber of state Assembly Speaker K. R. Ramesh Kumar in Bengaluru.

Furthermore, amid the high-end drama in the Speaker's Camber, DK Shivakumar also tried to hold talks with senior leaders including Ramalinga Reddy, Basavaraj Rayareddy, Munirathna, and S T Somashekhar in order to control the situation.

Current Karnataka Government numbers:

The Congress and JD(S) coalition, which won 115 seats combined, is currently in power in the Karnataka State Assembly managing a slim margin over the BJP's 105 seats. With the exodus of 13 MLAs from the JD(S)- Congress coalition, then the JD(S)-Congress combination gets reduced to 102 MLAs, falling short of BJP's 105 MLAs. But this excludes the BSP's 1 MLA and 2 Independent MLAs. With the reduced number of seats, the halfway mark has also been reduced to 105 with both BJP and the current government JD(S)-Congress-BSP) possess 105 seats.
